13 years on I still cannot stop admiring the GE90-115B every time I get on board a 77W. With 115K thrust, this will be the highest rated aviation engine in our lifetime (sans the rocket engines).

RR does not make anything with even remotely comparable thrust levels and GE's own GE9X is rated at 105K!

What never ceases to amaze me is that A388 could have been flown with 2.5 GE90 engines (70K X 4 = 280K) and if Airbus was not in Bed with RR and decided to make A388 a tri-jet with GE90 engines, Whalejet's fate would have been entirely different and its premature demise would have even been avoided.

It would be amazing to see a superjumbo in the form of a tri-holer. But there has been many complications with the tail-mounted engine design in the past, so manufactures probably won't be going there again.

True. Tri-jet is not an easy execution. L-1011 got it almost right, but still it wasn't perfect.

115B engine was tested at 128K thrust during certification, although it was officially rated at 115K.

128K X 2 is tantalizingly close to the power requirements of A388. I understand that engine manufacturers keep wide safety margins and never certify the engines anywhere near the edge of the capability envelope, but if GE tried they could have (within reason) produced an engine, two of which would have been sufficient to power A388.
