    • Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport
Sri Lanka is earning additional revenue for the first time in aviation history. Any airline flying over any country has to pay a fee to that country.

Airlines are now flying over Sri Lanka for two reasons with the opening of the Mattala Airport (MRIA). One it's a shorter distance to fly over Sri Lanka to the final destinations thus saving fuel and two, the opening of MRIA has enabled the airlines to land in any emergency. For this the airlines have to pay a royalty to the MRIA and the revenue from Overflying Charges after MRIA became operational, is Rs. 276,061,450.

Airports earn revenue by way of Airport Charges which include Landing, Parking, Aerobridges, Rentals, Embarkation Tax which totalled Rs. 224,256,565 as at November 30, 2014.

This alone accounts to around an average monthly revenue of Rs.12.5 million to the MRIA to date.

                  Ilushin 76 seen at MRIA

MRIA ended off the year with yet another achievement. Read more below to see full details. We thank all our supportive fans for being part of this journey, and wish all of you a great 2015.*

                  ----

A special Freighter Aircraft Illusion IL-76 landed at Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport MRIA on 30th Dec 2014 for an overnight stay for Crew Rest & Refueling amidst their flight from Milan, Italy via Dubai to Singapore.

It was an aircraft belonging to Volga-Dnepr Airlines based in Ulyanovsk, Russia, chartered by UT Air Cargo which is yet another giant in the global Air-cargo industry.

UT Air Cargo is also a cargo airline themselves, with a main hub at Russia’s Tyumen Roshchino Airport operating services to 23 countries in Europe, North and West Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia with a fleet of 17 aircraft. A division of UTAir Group, UTAir Cargo is also a MRO provider at its Tyumen hub, as well as undertaking limited SAR operations. UTAir Cargo also provides charter passenger services using its existing fleet.

                  Flight details were as follows:

                  Flight No: VDA 4462*
                  Arrival MRIA : 2025 h (Local ) on 30/12/2014
                  Dep from MRIA : 1147 h (Local) on 31/12/2014
Operator : UT Air Cargo / Volga-Dnepr Airlines
Point of Departure/Arrived from : Milan (Italy) via Dubai
                  Destination/Departed to : Singapore

The crew of 12 persons not only enjoyed the overnight stay in the nearby Peacock Hotel in Hambantota but also did some lavish purchases at Duty free as well at MRIA . They were quite pleased with the services and hospitality offered to them during their stay while admiring the picturesque location of this Airport and mentioned that this would be the beginning of many more similar flights to follow in the coming months.

M/s Serendib and M/s CMB Flight Services provided the flight support services to this flight at MRIA quite efficiently making use of the professional equipment and personnel at MRIA in an optimum manner.

This is a clear evidence that MRIA is picking up momentum as an en-route Technical and a Crew Rest Airport within this region, attracting world reputed airlines to patronize during their flights across our region.""

Hi Mr. Prakash.. I heard they were going to start one but, not sure whether they have done that or not. I guess it takes 4 or 5 hours from CMB to Mattala by road and should you fly, roughly 20-25 minutes

In fact I just saw a picture in one of the Blog that a AB320 in the hanger in Matalla in CMB they said. I thought then it may a part of CMB Airport. Well is it one some end of the runway. I think MRO already started. Good prospects being AB and B737 - widely used in this area.
