Think they could be interested in equity, however it just means they won't wan't to spend $210m on the airport (i.e. what the government spent on building it). Expect them to put in a lowball offer (on commercial terms), with the government having to write off the rest of the loan. Hopefully they will actually tender it out instead of only negotiating with China. It is going to be an expensive year for the government.

This is a glimpse of more to come...AASL is overstaffed and it is the most expensive airport to operate in South Asia

it is not $210...I think number is much higher...something around $290 or 250...MR's accounting department has decoupled the money paid for aviation storage oil tanks...which actually belong to CPC.

Sri Lanka just offered China some of their faltering infrastructure projects in exchange for debt relief. China said no, but . . .

The Chinese will never take-over anything in Sri Lanka (that includes UL).

Chinese have already burnt their fingers in Sri Lanka - they can kiss their money goodbye! Those loans will never be repaid imho.

They've realised how "Business" is done in Sri Lanka.

If that was the case, the Chinese would have never invested in the first place. These Chinese already have a good control in things happening in SL. In the beginning RW and co were so desperate to stop projects like the lotus tower and the port city claiming environmental issues. Looks like a few words from Mr. Xi to RW caused the environmental issues to disappear.

I don't think the new government was ever serious in actually stopping the projects. It looked more of a balancing act to appease western governments and India.

Now everything is slowly being given away in a 'legitimized' way where tenders are called but in the end there is no one else expect Chinese companies. Not that anyone else has money anyway.

Trust me, the Chinese will make sure they get their loans paid back. And the Chinese take a very long term approach to relevant issues. They are willing to burn through cash in the short term if there is a long term benefit in doing so.

I'm not sure the Chinese realised just how things work in Sri Lanka. They may have believed the optimistic forecasts for the port and the airport.

Knowing how "Business" is done in Sri Lanka my guess is that all the side deals needed to to be renegotiated so the money flow gets re-directed to the right bank accounts. Once this was done - "Business" as usual!

All these mega projects are nothing but Theft/Fraud/Corruption and Racketeering. There is zero benefit for the people of Sri Lanka.

Read the Weliamuna Comission report to see how this works at SriLankan Airlines. What is in this report is just the tip of the iceberg - no wonder the report has been buried.

                              • CAA Chairman, H.M. Nimalasiri said the CAA will be spending US$ 50 million of its own funds for the resurfacing. The runway is to be widened by 15 metres to 60 metres to accommodate the biggest commercial passenger jet, the Airbus A380. “However, the length of the runway will remain the same, as the minimum requirement for an A380 is only 3,000 metres, while the BIA runway is 3,500 metres,” he said.

The BIA has a single runway of asphalt, with takeoff and landing distances of 3,441 m and 3,350 m respectively.

He said that, as of now, the occasional A380 that comes to the BIA has difficulty, as the wings of the aircraft are getting stuck on the grass and cannot gather sufficient thrust for takeoff. “This is not good,” he said.

In addition, Phase II of the BIA expansion project is to have a second runway, also able to accommodate the A380, with another taxiway to the second runway.

Phase II is scheduled to begin in September/October 2017.
