what makes you think that colombo is ranked one of the best in asia??

cmb is far behind many asian and world airports in many areas.
srilankans should take look at indian airports today (eg: del, bom, blr, ccu, hyd), they have moved far ahead in terms of airport infrastructure, appeal, customer service, duty free/airport retail etc etc

Please remember when new terminal was built in CMB those days India had the airports in the poor status. But I want to see CMB as one of the best airport. When does the Phase 2 construction going to begin?

Thanks umedhah for sharing the picture of QR A346 from Colombo. Do you think CMB can handle longest aircraft like A346 in all their aprons?

I've only seen her docking at outermost gates such as B14 A9 and sometimes in the outermost remote bays of C apron ( bays you meet immediately when entering from the runway side)

            • Mattala back on the radar

The government is planning to call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) from foreign investors to run the commercial operations at the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA).Under this, a master developer would be sought to hand over the commercial operations of the airport, Airport and Aviation Services Ltd. Executive Director Johanne Jayaratne told the Business Times on Friday.

He noted that as part of the plan the government would call for EOI for the development of Mattala within two months.
Proposed investors would be handling the commercial aspect of the airport as in the running of the Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) operations, bringing in airlines and resort development as well.

Moreover, the government plans to carry out a promotional programme to attract increased airlines to the destination.
Currently, Mr. Jayaratne said FlyDubai has agreed to extend its operations into winter as well and in addition Rotana Jet has also resumed operations to the southern airport.

In future, Air Arabia which is currently in discussion with authorities is likely to resume operations to Mattala in the summer of next year, he explained. He also pointed out that they were currently offering incentives under a financial model with discounts to attract airlines to fly into the southern international airport. In addition, the state is looking at ensuring that internal flights could also land and operate from this destination in a bid to accommodate light aircraft.

it says there was a plan to build a huge structure of a Lotus Flower on top of the New terminal at BIA worth of 220 Millions of SL rupees.

And new Government has stopped this after considering it was a unnecessary thing and no proper reason to have it.

                  • There is a online petition to Convert Mattala Airport into an Elephant Viewing Center. I am not sure what to say

                    You can find it hear
The monthly payments on the US $210 million Chinese loan it took to build Mattala Airport and the US $2 million a month in (2366 signatures on petition)

This is what the overview says

The monthly payments on the US $210 million Chinese loan it took to build Mattala Airport and the US $2 million a month in maintenance costs is putting the Sri Lankan government under pressure to make Mattala airport a commercial success (5)(6).
However, since the airport is surrounded by elephant and wildlife habitat it cannot become a commercial success as an airport without putting the lives of 25% of Sri Lanka's wild elephants at risk. Any displacement of the elephants around Mattala Airport will have disastrous effects on elephant populations in surrounding national parks in Yala, Uda Walawe National Park and Bundala National Park (1).Besides the detrimental effect on elephants, other reasons to cease aviation activities at Mattala airport is that its only runway is a dangerous crosswind runway and the unusually high number of bird strikes suffered by aircraft at Mattala puts human lives at risk (9) (19).
Any effort to make Mattala Airport a commercial success has to involve the elephants in a constructive way (18). The elephants are the greatest asset in Southern Sri Lanka, arguably the biggest source of income in that area being from wildlife tourism. Yala National Park, adjoining Mattala Airport’s proposed Managed Elephant Range (MER) (2), brings in revenue over US $2million a year (3).For this trend to continue the safety of the southern elephant herds have to be assured.
The terminal building at Mattala Airport provides the perfect structure to observe wild elephants at close quarters. The elevated building, with large windows typical of airport terminals would allow visitors unprecedented viewing of elephants and other wildlife without the hazards associated with typical safaris to both wildlife and the visitors (12)(13)(14)(15).
Jetwings has a hotel in Yala (8), likewise there could be a Jetwings Mattala. Alternatively, Disney could potentially use the building as a wildlife hotel to capitalize on the success of the movie “The Monkey Kingdom” (11). For this to happen, the fence surrounding the airport will have to be removed and the tarmac and runway will have to be torn up and the habitat restored. The cost of this transition could be recovered by not having to maintain the tarmac, fences and runway and by the sale of aviation related equipment at the Mattala Airport or by transferring this equipment to the expansion of the Bandaranayke International Airport (4). The concrete and rebar from the tarmac and runway and the fencing can also be salvaged as part of the cost recovery process (16)(17) and International funds can be found for the habitat restoration of the tarmac and runway (10).
Yala National Park is finding it difficult to cope with more tourists without harming the wildlife that call the park home (7)(12)(13). Therefore, implementing a new national park in the proposed Mattala Managed Elephant Range (MER) with Mattala Terminal Building in the center acting as a hotel/wildlife research center/wildlife hospital is key to the future viability of the Southern National Parks.

I'd be up for it if Disney actually wanted to take over the building, otherwise I agree with you!

I thought HRI to be used as an alternative airport during construction work in CMB.

                            BIA’s temporary shutdown in 2017

                            By Sunimalee Dias
                            View(s):

Sri Lanka’s main international airport, Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) is scheduled to partially close in 2017 for three months to carry out maintenance work on the runway, Civil Aviation Authority Director General (DG) H.M.C. Nimalsiri told the Business Times on Friday.

He noted that this would be decided early since airlines need to be informed one year ahead of such closures.
In this respect, he pointed out that this would be the first time such overlaying or re-surfacing would be carried out on the runway at the BIA since its construction in 1986.

This would amount to a closure of the airport operations for eight hours per day for a period of three months, the DG said.
Mr. Nimalsiri said that re-surfacing would be carried out on the runway due to the wear and tear on it and since the friction level on it could come down over use throughout the years and also due to loose elements as well.

He pointed out that a lot of safety hazards were at stake unless the runway was not maintained properly that would be carried out in one year’s time.*The cost of the project is yet to be estimated and currently the CAA is planning on working out how to make the necessary arrangements to ensure there would be fewer disturbances to traffic at the airport, he said.

“We will find the least congested hours causing least disturbance for airlines and work out an alternative,” the DG said.
Currently, there are 175 aircraft movements per day and the closure would affect airport operations, hotels and the rest of the country as well, he pointed out.

Expansion work on the BIA is ongoing at a cost of Rs.80 billion that would enhance its capacity from the current 7.8 million to 15 million upon completion within three year, it was stated.

                            • No need Mattala operation during CMB contruction working time. if DXB runaways can close for 2 hours for maintenane and still Airport can operate why not BIA??
