  • Was at HRI recently and from what I could see sitting in a FZ aircraft was that the airport has been done really well. The runway is exquisite (not bumpy at all even in the 738 - unlike CMB) and the taxiways and the apron area was very nicely built as well.

It will be a real shame if it goes to waste because of petty politics

I think FZ is the only airline now operate via HRI. Did you notice how many passengers were embarked & disembarked at HRI on the FZ flight?

That's interesting. Why hadn't they gained from the SriLankan contract?

In aviation, aircraft ground handling defines the servicing of an aircraft while it is on the ground and (usually) parked at a terminal gate of an airport.

So when Mattala International Airport had many planes parked on the ground or at terminal gates to gain profits?

Ground handling requires quite a few staff as well as a lot of very specialised equipment (pushback tractors/Ground Power Units/Air starter units/Hi loader/stairs/fork lifts/cargo dollys.

Some serious $$ involved in setting this up and further costs in keeping this running. The only source of revenue comes from servicing aircraft. Since there are almost no aircraft using HRI you have large fixed costs and almost no revenue.

It's possible that a special deal was made with operators flying into HRI - quite possible that there is no revenue.

From a business standpoint this is the correct move.

What does need to be answered is how much money has been wasted on buying this equipment?
Always fly a stable approach - it's the only stability you'll find this business

If FZ carry on carrying less than 10 pax they will cancel HRI for sure.

SL's previous government operated unnessary flights out of HRI for show off!! It would've made some sense if UL have operated only few Male and Southern China flights via HRI to connect the China-Maldives market.

How the future will be for HRI ? Any ideas to give some life to this failed project?

Long term lease and duty concessions for DHL or Federal Express to establish air cargo hub in South Asia.

For Example - FedEx Express Super Hub, Memphis International Airport

The FedEx Express Super Hub was established in 1993 and handles approximately 3.3 million packages a day. Spread over five miles, the facility has parking slots for 175 aircraft and 300 miles of conveyor belts. It supports the largest air cargo fleet in the world.

The airport also offers facilities of its own through Cargo Central, a five-phase build-to-suit facility featuring approximately 1.4 million square feet of ramp area.

The first phase of the project, which has already been completed, offers 36,000ft² of building space and each subsequent phase will offer another 61,500ft². Once complete, the facility will offer cold and hazardous materials storage as well as front-office administration and management spaces.

Seriously CMB needs to be upgraded soon. Shame Apron area of Colombo (VCBI) is getting old and horrible.

Not a good news. Seems to be local airports are overtaking again on Colombo VCBI. Also Chinese investment to help triple Maldives airport capacity - http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/n...rport-capacity

                        • Mattala to be closed at night

Aviation Minister said that the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) would be shut down in the nights. At a media briefing held in Colombo Aviation Minister Arjuna Ranatunga said they would have to take such a step as Mattala did not generate any income. "We are having discussions to close Mattala Airport during the night. The government has to spend about Rs. 250 million for maintenance. This maintenance has to be done at the cost of our tax payers," he said. However the Minister said they had no intentions to shut down the Airport completely. "The airport will not be shut down completely. We are keeping it to be used if needed,” he said. “We are having discussions with investors either to use it as a workshop hangar or to do aircraft maintenance," he said. - See more at: http://www.dailymirror.lk/65271/clos....SRJZYsWa.dpuf

Good move !! Do you know what's the new opening hours of Mattala Airport? Will this new idea affect the emergency aircraft landing if it happened during the night hours when the airport is closed?

Flydubai is the only airline currently operates out of Mattala Airport and it's flying daily during the morning hours (STA:06:45-STD:07:35).

MRO Facility has to be started urgently at HRI - otherwise this airport is useless. Terminals and tarmac facility has to be expanded at CMB which is getting bussier these days.

SriLankan Airlines head of finance Yasantha Dissanayake, speaking at CAPA’s Airline Fleet & Finance Summit Asia, said (02-Mar-2015) ancillary revenue programmes are going to play a major role in the carrier’s future profitability, flagging MRO and technical training as a key area. Mr Dissanayake noted: We are hoping to build a new MRO facility and offer more capacity through MRO training. Indigo do their MRO training at Sri Lanka, and we have a three-year contract to do C-checks so there is scale.”
