The Ministerial Committee on SriLankan Airlines is set to meet today with the resign offer of six members of the SriLankan Board likely to be taken up with expectations of a new board being appointed to make way for restructuring of the troubled business entity, a top official confirmed.

The Committee headed by the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will also carry forward the restructuring discussion on the cash-strapped national airline.

British consultant Nyras Consulting Company, specialising in the global aviation sector, was appointed to lead the restructuring of the carrier. The consultants, who have been tasked with restructuring and finding an investor for the airline, presented their first report to both committees last month.

The preliminary report by the consultants outlined a restructuring program under five broad areas - managing the right size and type of aircraft fleet, debt restructuring, tax concessions, network rationalising and fuel price - to restructure and improve its financial position. The consultants had expressed confidence in finding a suitable investor once the restructuring was complete.

The SriLankan Airlines Board of Management’s offer to resign from their posts came two days after this preliminary meeting. A letter detailing a board decision by six of the seven board members to offer to resign was submitted to the Prime Minister’s office on 22 December 2017, Sri Lankan Chairman Ajit Dias confirmed to the media later.

However, no decision has been taken on the offer since then. Public Enterprise Development Minister Kabir Hashim and ministry secretary Ravindra Hewavitharana both told the Daily FT that they were not officially informed about the offer made by the board.

However, it was speculated that the offer to resign may have stemmed from an earlier discussion within the officials committee suggesting that it would be more appropriate to appoint a new board to carry out the changes.

I am thinking the same way. ALA,ALB,ALC,ALD,ALJ and ALH are old air crafts. They need newer A 330 or A 350 to replace them for long haul routes.

CX is currently utilising B77W on three weekly flights and A333 on four weekly flights. Does CX have good pax demand/yield on CMB route?

                • SriLankan Airlines – total privatization or liquidation?

...Sri Lanka, along with its neighbors Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Pakistan and several African countries stubbornly stuck to the ‘national/flag carrier’ concept. Misplaced national pride prevented governments from visualizing the negative impact of diminishing airfares, increase in the cost of fuel, aircraft and manpower, the resulting losses and burden on their economies. Almost all such airlines became politically rather than commercially driven. Suffice to state, besides SriLankan Airlines, Biman Bangladesh, Air India, Nepal Airlines, PIA, Kenya Airways and South African Airways are all loss-making concerns today and a severe burden to their respective national treasuries. Nigerian Airways ceased operations in 2003...

Unfortunately they cannot exit the leases & not much of long haul routes to operate

If I'm not mistaken, I think the transponder needs to be programmed with the callsign for each flight by the crew and I have noticed that occasional incorrect callsigns on UL flights such as AKXXX, or ALLXXX etc on FR24. In the above case, they seemed to have corrected the mistake mid-flight since the tracking for UL281 starts off the coast of India exactly where the tracking for UL291 ends.In both cases, aircraft is 4R-ALR.

There are 3 white-tail A350 sitting in Toulouse (the 4th was never built). This is a huge embarrassment for airbus. I doubt UL can expect any favours from airbus.

If the remaining 4 A350 were ordered on a contract without a termination clause - then there's no option but to pay! ($800 Million according to the papers plus whatever deposits have been paid).

Aercap is also having to pay for the parked A350 - a declining asset value with no revenue so far. They will also not be doing UL any favours.

Any talk of "re-structuring" or PPP is nothing more than a fantasy by people who cannot conceive of a shut down.
Always fly a stable approach - it's the only stability you'll find this business

Cancellation of the four-Airbus-A350-900 leases and the downfall of SriLankan

The cancellation of the four Airbus A350-900 leases, executed under the current management led by the pilot CEO, was one of the most controversial decisions ever taken in the history of the airline. ..

This is the same guy who was having spitting competition with current CEO in DM. He assumes that profit can be made on A350s...if loses are made on FRA on lower lease cost of A332s I am not sure how you can make profit on A350s (where leases signed by previous management is far higher than market value)

He also assume that Oil prices are low...Today it is 3 year high...WTI trading at $63 and Brent trading at $69.

Problem with UL is the number 7000 and accumulated loses.

opinion is not more than politically motivated write up.
