Tell us about your very first flight. Where, when, why and how old you were ..

My first ever flight was in 1994 in the age of 11. I went for a holiday trip in a L1011 on CMB - MAA UL121

Domestic - 1994, when I was 4, from Colombo to Anuradhapura on Lion Air.

International - Early October 1995. Air Lanka L1011 CMB - BKK - HKG. Dad was friends with the pilots, so they let us in for the landing at HKG. We sat in anticipation as we manoeuvred through the high rises and came in for a smooth landing on the infamous Kai Tak runway. I still remember it all so clearly! :P

The first time I ever experienced a small aircraft, and the first time I ever took the controls of an aircraft, I was 14. I was just entering high school, and as a graduation/birthday present, my grandparents had purchased a scenic flight tour from the local flight centre near my house. It was only good for a half-hour of flying, but that was good enough for me. I remember one summers-day, I called the airport to see if I could use my voucher, little did I know that the man on the other end of the phone was Brandon Macdonald, the man who would Instruct me from nothing all the way to a CPL at a different flight school. The man I went flying with that day was difficult to understand, as he spoke (and still speaks) with a very distinct Iranian accent, he had told me his name was Akbar Bashiri, and that he would be my instructor. Knowing that I wanted to be a pilot one day, he let me take control of the aircraft right almost as soon as it started. In fact, the only thing I didn't do on the flight was use the radio, nor did I land. He was so overjoyed to be flying on such a nice day, that he extended our half hour flight into an hour and a half flight, no extra cost. At the end of it, he handed me a study guide for my radio-operators license, and said that even though I couldn't get my PPL until I was a bit older, I could at least get my radio-operator's license. It would be almost 4 years until my next flight at the same school, with another Instructor, Brett Frey, that I would later fly with on many occasions while in College. Although I didn't attend my local flight school, it seemed that some of these people would play a large part in my training. Brandon being my PFI for PPL, as well as being my Night Rating Instructor, and my CPL recommending instructor, and I would have many instrument and CPL training related flights with Brett. After graduating from College with my CPL and Multi-IFR in hand, I came back home, and began an Instructor Rating. My instructor for that would be non-other-than Akbar. It's funny, my first instructor ever, turned out to be my last instructor ever. Also, I didn't log my first flight until I went to College, April 14th of 2008, in a Zlin 242L (C-FCSB) with my then PFI Keith Toplis (who only flew with me twice, and very late in the semester I had worked so hard to make it into. I was told he was a great instructor, but I only knew him as the guy who'd rather fly with the 3rd years in the twin, instead of his 1st years).

I was flying to Rome FCO with my mother and brother...
Flight: AirLanka UL581
A/C: A340-300
1995

I was 11 years.. and after the take off from CMB we had a lot of turbulances and the flight was half empty... my mother was togeather with my brother in 2 seats.. I was in the middle.. and no one was there next to me... 5 seats empty... and after the flight made a left turn I saw the wing which was going to touch the sea.. and I was terrified... asked my mother to get out from the aircraft...... But after few min it was really wonderful... the landing was amazing... right side turn, nose shaprply down.... and a nice touch down....

Alright Banu - you can do the age statistics of the forum users too....:D

My first flight was to Rome on UL 5XX via Dubai on L1011. It was late March 1989 and I was 29 years old at that time (Banu - do your maths now). flight was delayed from 1.00 AM to 5.30 AM. My girl friend (now my wife) and my mother came to drop us with a friend and they saw another UL taking off at 1.00 AM and my friend saw tears in both of their eyes. He wrote a nice write up on my wedding day out of this. By the way, at boarding they said it is free seating due to change of aircraft (I believe they had more than one seating configurations in L10's) and there was a mad rush to grab a seat. I saw parents/kids husbands/wives all over and cabin crew was kind of helpful to sort out mixups. It was a day time flight and the other most memorable thing was we were on hold over city of Rome for at least couple of rounds with a clear view of all the landmarks prior to landing at Fiumicino.

i VOTED 4 options , Mel , Seoul , KTM , Nairobi .... we have enough Indian connections now lets try to bring out some crowd from the other end of the world , though many indians come to sl there is not much effect on us , these people are same as mine low budget ..... so lets try to get some more $ from other destinations , Make a Journey to China stop over at KTM . India doesnt allow us to do CMB - DEL - KTM bcz DEL - KTM is a fully packed flight and they dnt want to share the income between us , but also KTM - PEK is a fully packed destination i knw it well coz i have been there so we can try that ;)

Madurai . The reason is not just because of above results . But one of Oldest cities with enormous tourist potential who have to take the long route to come in . Eventhough it still ranks on top in southern tourism .
Be it kodaikanal or Rameswaram or Madurai Temple or Kanyakumari or Courtallam Herbal falls its the only transit .
International Travellers will be happy to land in Madurai directly from london .

Amazing to see local support for madurai airport .

Great going ! Srilankan airlines - Tamilnadu market is urs to take Srilanka tamilnadu relationship to new level

Tamil Nadu remains an all-season destination for tourists – backpackers heading for the beaches, the city-bred searching for that rural experience, the devout seeking spiritual solace in myriad temples, the ones bound for hill stations to escape the blazing sun, or those arriving for treatment.

More than 14 crore tourists visited Tamil Nadu during 2011, marking a 42.34 per cent increase over the previous year in which the State played host to 10.58 crore visitors.

According to the State Tourism Department's data, the flow of foreign tourists into the State was 33.08 lakh last year as against 28.04 lakh in 2010. Domestic tourists accounted for 13.67 crore in 2011 against 10.30 crore the previous year. Since 2008, the domestic tourists' arrivals have doubled while that of foreign visitors has gone up by 50 per cent.

“The number represents a 10 per cent increase over the corresponding period in the previous year. It could have been much more but for the fact that the State faced Assembly and civic polls, frequent change of officers in the tourism department and delay in announcing tourism-related promotional activities,” said a senior official.

Talking to The Hindu, some of the leading travel operators said: “These figures reinforce the fact that Tamil Nadu is an all-season destination whether for beach tourism, rural tourism, health tourism or leisure tourism. If we continue to post 30 per cent growth in tourists' arrival, we can definitely reach the topmost slot in tourists' arrival.”

Out of the 14 crore tourists, Chennai received about 1.29 crore, including 6.68 lakh foreigners, followed by Rameswaram 97.58 lakh, Madurai (84.93 lakh), Tiruvannamalai (81.05 lakh) and Kodaikanal (79.10 lakh).

Well-known hill stations such as Udhagamandalam and Coonoor played hosts to 77 lakh visitors. Interestingly, lesser known tourist spots are getting more number of domestic and foreign tourists. Yercaud was visited by 39.33 lakh, Yelagiri received 5.90 lakh visitors and Hogenakkal played host to 56.68 lakh people.

Mamallapuram has been receiving a steady flow of foreign tourists throughout the year. About 300 foreigners visited Mamallapuram daily to witness the December-January Music and dance festival. In all, the shore temple collectively received 32.47 lakh visitors.

Foreigners also visited temple towns in big numbers. Rameswaram and Madurai were the preferred destination for the local and foreign visitors.

Due to improved rail link, Tiruchendur received 77.99 lakh pilgrims, followed closely by Thanjavur that received 57.12 lakh visitors. The other destinations were Palani (57.59 lakh), Kumbakonam (53.90 lakh), Kancheepuram (44.41 lakh), Velankanni, Chidambaram, Nagore and Tirutani.

Kanyakumari was visited by 73.25 lakh visitors. Poompuhar, Panchalankuruchi, Pichavaram, Mudumalai and Courtallam were also frequented by visitors.

Tourism-friendly measures

“The State government has been announcing tourism-friendly measures at several pilgrim centres. But their implementation has to be speeded up. Though the tourism department runs boat-houses in different parts of the State, it has to promote adventure and water sports too, on the lines of its neighbours, to attract more tourists to lesser-known spots. Currently, the void is filled by private operators in and around Chennai,” a leading tourist operator said.

In all probability, Tamil Nadu may retain its second spot in the country in attracting foreign tourists. However, the official rankings will be released only after a few months.

http://www.thehindu.com/news/states/tamil-nadu/article2951346.ece?homepage=true

^^ This is Tourism potential alone which itself is a big chunk!! Apart from this we have several people who are labours in the Middle-East, Far-East, Europe and US who would definitely use Colombo as a transit since it is going to be most probably the first International destination from IXM. We really are puzzled in what way the Sri Lankan airways management expect us to show the demand.

If you have confirmed your dates of flying, try AK as booking early save you a lot of money as the fares are very reasonable, especially December where fares are quite high. AK flies to all 3 destinations but you need to land in KUL first then off to SIN and to Guangzhou. I dont think SIN has a direct to Guangzhou but u can take via KUL or BKK. I managed to get a KUL/CMB/KUL earlier this year for only about USD150 which is quite a steal.

Same Banu.. Ive Flown UL since i was like 4.. My 1st flight was when i was around 3 or 4 (1985-86) in L1011 from CMB to London not sure if it was Gatwick or LHR and back via DXB.
Then several times CMB-DHA (till they moved the airport to DMM) in L1011s, A332/A343s (when my dad used to work in KSA).. However i was not fully impressed with ULs Crew Passenger service on the Middle east sector compared to other routes. Possibly they might have thought all Pax in the flight are poor laborers going to the middle-east.(still its not good treat them differently). I am happy to say that i have flown in all the older fleet in A343 ( ADA,ADB,ADC) and Almost all the prev A332s (ALA,ALB,ALC,ALD,as well as ALE, & ALF which are in heaven). Haven't had a time to fly on ADD,ADE,ADF & ADG as well as ALG,ALH & ALJ thats coz im in AKL :S.
However ULs other routes ive flown were good. CMB-SIN/ CMB-KUL-SIN. Still i prefer to fly UL :)

Yes, crew should be treating all pax as the same. But I think Middle east sector is a difficult one for crew members to serve. You would have seen this sector transporting passengers who from all sort of back grounds. Majority of the travellers are labour market, some VFR, some Passngers who travel on onward connections and a few Business traffic.

When I fly on UL227 few years ago on the CMB-KWI via DXB, me and dad were sitting on economy class and my flight fully loaded with labourers (Srilankans and South Indians). In the start Cabin crew was very kind to all passengers. Few hours after these labour passengers have started behaving clumsy in the sense : dropping drinks on the floor, talking loud, demanding for food to the crew member even after they served.. In the middle of the flight it was like a road-bus. I understood from cabin crew's face they already tired of serving these people. Our flight touched down in DXB and it was off-loading DXB passengers and loading passengers from DXB before head to KWI. There were two racist arab men came on board at DXB. Those men were making fun out of our UL cabin crew and on the co-passengers. But the cabin crew remained calm and they kindly served the passengers.

Since then, when I fly on UL/KU to KWI , I always book on Business class.

From what i have seen, serving the passengers in the Middle east sector is so difficult for crew members it's not like Europe sector and Pakistan sector. I have seen Europe and Pakistan passengers are bit descent.

When did S7 Airlines start serving CMB ?

Oneworld alliance members currently operating to Colombo are Royal Jordanian, Cathay Pacific, Malaysia Airlines and Finnair (seasonal basis). British Airways will commence Colombo operation on 14-Apr-2013. SriLankan Airlines and Qatar Airways are the present airline-operators out of Colombo may join the Oneworld by the end of 2013.

Air Berlin, American Airlines, and JAL Japan Airlines have codeshare operations out of Colombo. but Qantas??

S7 Airlines never operated a revenue passenger operation to Colombo however they send aircraft to Colombo to do a maintanance.

‘Excellent progress in preparations to board oneworld ’

M F Jabir in Kuala Lumpur

http://www.dailynews.lk/2013/02/05/z_pi-Excellent.jpg
SriLankan Chairman Nishantha Wickemasinghe

The progress so far made in joining oneworld alliance have been excellent, SriLankan Chairman Nishantha Wickemasinghe told Dailynews Business.Wickemasinghe expressed these sentiments participating as a special invitee in the ceremony held by Malaysia Airlines (MAS) to unveil its first aircraft decorated in the livery of the oneworld alliance in a ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia last Thursday.

Wickemasinghe said that our systems have to be compatible with the systems of other members of the oneworld alliace and many new systems needed to be put in place.

He said a very good team headed by Manik Gunasekera has been working round the clock for this purpose.

“ I have been following up with the oneworld management company and thay said our progress has been excellent,” Wickremasinghe said. He said there were many benefits in the offine for SriLankan by joining the oneworld alliance.

He said a single airline with limited aircraft, could not conquer the world itself.

The alliance with oneworld would provide SriLankan travellers the opportunity to fly to any part of the world with a SriLankan ticket.

He said to enter the alliance, the vote of members were required.

“Although there were many airlines, oneworld has decided to invite SriLankan because of the strategic importance of our National Carrier. The invitation to SriLankan Airlines (UL) by oneworld alliance to join them is ample evidence of UL's strength and acceptance,” he said.

Wickremasinghe added that SriLankan had made a thorough evaluation of the situation, as there were many alliances.

However by joining oneworld, SriLankan could derive maximum advantage in the aviation world and last year's invitation to come on board with oneworld, was encouraging and due recognition to the progress SriLankan had achieved in the past few years.

3K has been trying to expand out of their home market.

Would not be a surprise if they did manage to grab CMB !! They can feed KUL traffic in .. + more than a fair percentage of their travellers are Australians - and it will give a nice boost to tourists.

They are the vapour trails left behind by jet engines..

What are jet contrails?

When any fuel is burnt it gives out carbon dioxide n water vapour. jet exhaust gives the same and due to very low teperatures at higher altitudes the water vapour freez. This forms the condensed trails or con-trails behind the jets. Usually happens when the air is almost full of water moisture at higher altitudes and if u see contrails there ia high chance of a rain on following day. Hope its not too much of things.

The 767-400ER's closest competitor from Airbus is the A330-200.The 767-400ER may be replaced in Boeing's line-up by the 787-10 if approved for offering. A total of 38 767-400ERs had been delivered, with 16 to Continental Airlines and 21 to Delta Air Lines as of 2009.A total of 37 767-400ERs were in airline service as of July 2009"

A picture of the A340 Sri Lankan Airlines is to admire Wunderland Hamburg in miniature. © Miniature WonderlandAn A340 Sri Lankan Airlines takes off and lands every day 20 times in the Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg . The aircraft model is the latest addition to the Knuffingen Airport - one of the eight areas of tourist attraction.

A plane model of the Sri Lankan Airlines takes off and lands now 20 times per day in the Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg. The tourist attraction in Hamburg every year attracts over 1.5 million visitors and a total of eight areas. One of them is Knuffingen Airport, where the aircraft model has the Sri Lankan Airlines produced in 1:100 scale found its place. The A340 is equipped with original paint and lighting, and runs daily self-employed immediately from the airport to the gate. There he is pushed back by a pushback vehicle and rolls to start and runway. There, the model plane takes off and lands thereafter. "It is wonderful and exciting, even now in this small but unique of its kind in the world to be represented airport," says Maria Schleder, Sales Manager Germany of Sri Lankan Airlines.

Sri Lankan Airlines currently operates six "real" A340 and also has in its all-Airbus fleet also on machines of the type A320 and A330. Sri Lankan was founded in 1979 and is the national carrier of Sri Lanka. The Airlines sets new standards in service and comfort, many of which bear witness Awards: 'World's Friendliest Cabin Staff by Skytrax and Best Airline in South Asia from Travel Trade Gazette 'are just two of them. Sri Lankan Airlines is expected to join in the coming year of the Oneworld alliance.
